Active Research Project(s): Elucidating the mechanisms of action and clinical implications of herb-drugs interactions: focusing on anti-diabetic and lipid lowering drugs and ethinylestradiol based oral contraceptive. Exploring high-resolution satellite imagery capability for mapping of water quality in the micro-water bodies in areas within urban and peri-urban areas of the Tshwane and eThekwini Metropolitan areas.
Biography: Dr Nokulunga Hlengwa is a senior lecturer in the field of (Biochemistry) at the University of Zululand at Kwa-Dlangezwa campus. Her research interests are in assessing potential herb-drug interactions between herbal medicines that are commercially available and conventional drugs. Divulging mechanism of interactions induced by the herbal medicines which may possibly alter the absorption, distribution metabolism and elimination of the conventional drug. This is achieved by using various in vitro and in vivo models.
