Effects of stem training on the physiology, growth, and yield responses of indeterminate tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants grown in protected cultivation

Abstract:
The lower yield of tomatoes grown in tunnels, due to the limited space, remains a challenge. Stem training has long been identified as one of the most important horticultural practices used to improve the yield and fruit quality of tomatoes grown in commercial tunnels; however, there is little information available on the domeshaped tunnels that are used, particularly by smallholder farmers. The common stem-training methods used in tunnels include the Single-Stem (SS), the Double-Stem (DS) and the Two-Plants-per-Pot (TPP) methods. Their effect on the plants’ growth, development and physiology varies significantly, and hence, it affects crop productivity. The experiment was conducted in an 8 m 30 m dome-shaped tunnel and the treatment included the single-stem, double-stem and two-plants-per-pot methods. A higher photosynthetic rate was observed in the SS treatment, followed by the DS treatment. Similar trends were found in the growth, yield and fruit quality parameters of the SS and DS treatments. However, the DS and TPP treatments exhibited, on average, a higher number of fruits, as well as a higher colour index, TSS, TA and Brima per harvest, than the SS treatment. The study indicated that the double-stem and two-plants-per-pot training methods are the best for farmers who seek to optimize their yields and maximize their profits for this cultivar.

- This study considers ocean–atmosphere influences on marine productivity over the shelf near Cape St. Fran cis, South Africa. Multiday estimates of chlorophyll fluorescence in the period 2006–2017 with an area outlined by 34.5–33.75◦ S and 24–26.5◦ E provide the basis for evaluation using data from high-resolution reanalyses. Correlations with the mean annual cycle of chlorophyll fluorescence were significant for salinity, linking marine productivity and the coastal hydrology. A strengthened Agulhas Current induces cyclonic shear that lifts water at the shelf edge. Composite high-chlorophyll-fluorescence events were dominated by a large-scale midlatitude atmospheric ridge of high pressure. The resultant easterly winds caused offshore transport and the upwelling of cool nutrient-rich water in multiday events at the beginning and end of austral sum mer. Environmental controls on interannual fluctuations of the commercial fishery were also explored. Southwestward currents and diminished heat fluxes favored the squid catch, while anchovy and sardine catches were linked with upper northerly wind, consistent with large-scale weather patterns that underpin coastal upwelling and river discharge. Productivity lags a few days behind cyclonic wind and current shear and the upstream coastal hydrology, which shares a common atmospheric driver.

- 2019| American Physical So...The spectroscopy of 79Se is studied via the 82Se(α, α3n)79Se fusion-evaporation reaction. A negative-parity magnetic dipole band in 79Se is established for the first time. Based on the calculations by the self-consistent tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory, this new dipole band can be classified as a “stapler” band, which has a relatively stable symmetric prolate deformation as a function of rotational frequency. Hence, it is demonstrated that the stapler bands exist not only in the oblate and triaxial nuclei, but also in prolate nuclei. By examining the angular momentum coupling, it is found that the five valence nucleons in the high-j orbitals play a major role in the closing of the stapler.

- 2019| American Physical So...A pair of nearly degenerate positive-parity bands were observed in 82 Br for the first time using the 82 Se(α,p3n) reaction. The positive-parity doublet bands are proposed to be chiral doublet bands based on the triaxial particle rotor model and the potential energy surface calculations. The root-mean-square values of the angular momentum components and their probability distributions are discussed in detail to exhibit the chiral geometry and its evolution in 82 Br.

R.Mdletshe, LindaSithole, Makuhane Abel2021| American Physical So...Background: The shape of most nuclei is described by its quadrupole deformation (showing the deviation from spherical shape) and its triaxiality (showing the deviation from axial symmetry). Nuclei affected by triaxiality show additional collective rotational bands, called γ bands, that appear at low excitation energy. The γ bands can be caused by the precession of a nucleus with triaxial shape, but can also arise from small γ vibrations around an axially symmetric shape. Purpose: The aim of this work is to search for new collective excitations in 187Os in particular related with the γ degree of freedom. Methods: The rotational structures of 187Os were populated by the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements of γ- γ coincidences, angular distribution ratios and γ-ray intensities were performed using eleven Compton-suppressed Ge clover detectors. Results: The previously known positive-parity band built on the 11/2+ isomer has been extended up and a new excited positive-parity band built above a 15/2+ state has been observed. The 11/2+ band was assigned a νi13/2 configuration while the new 15/2+ band was associated with a coupling of the valence i13/2 neutron with the γ band of the even-even core. The quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations provide a good agreement with the experimental data for both bands. They describe the 15/2+ band as a collective excitation with respect to the 11/2+ band that corresponds to a precession of the intermediate nuclear axis similarly to the precession of a rotating top. Conclusions: As shown by the calculations, the new rotational band can be understood as resulting from the three-dimensional rotation of a triaxially-deformed nucleus. However, a description based on the vibrations of a γ-soft nuclear shape should also be investigated in order to firmly establish the nature of the excited positive parity band. Further studies able to distinguish between these alternative descriptions will be beneficial.

- Mixed metal halide perovskites are gaining paramount interest due to efficient band gap tenability and improved optical properties compared to their single metal halide perovskites. It is thus valuable to investigate compositional changes in lead halide perovskites to explore energy changes. Herein, we report the synthesis of a lead to lead free hybrid perovskite solid solution (CH3NH3Pb1−xCuxBr3) as nanoparticles and films. The increasing concentration of Cu2+ ions in the site of the Pb2+ ion in the perovskite shifted the diffraction peaks to a larger angle. Uniform spherically shaped nanoparticles were synthesized by a wet chemical method, the higher Cu2+ concentration leads to agglomeration, producing sheet like morphologies. However, the deposition of thin films of CH3NH3Pb1−xCuxBr3 perovskite solid solution shows that well defined morphologies begin to appear with increasing concentrations of Cu2+ in the perovskite structure. The as-prepared bulk lead free CH3NH3CuBr3 perovskite shows a band gap of 1.65 eV. A blue shift in photoluminescence (PL) was observed with copper enriched hybrid perovskites.

- The debate about whether law schools in South Africa prepare students adequately for practice has been ongoing for years now and the nature of legal education has been called into question many times in the past few years. The disjuncture between legal education and professional demands has been echoed by many professional bodies in South Africa and there is general consensus that there is an urgent need to produce well-rounded and better-educated law graduates who are ready for practice (Van Niekerk “The Four Year Undergraduate LLB: Where to From Here?” 2013 34(3) Obiter 533). It goes without saying that the legacy of apartheid and the dehumanising effect of a racialised past has seen many students entering tertiary education from a poor and imbalanced schooling system and this has served as a major obstacle to success (Greenbaum “Re-Visioning Legal Education in South Africa: Harmonising the Aspirations of Transformative Constitutionalism with the Challenges of Our Educational Legacy” (8 November 2014) https://ssrn.com/abstract=2575289 (accessed 2018-02-10)). For many law schools in South Africa, imparting skills that are essential for lawyering in the “new” South Africa remains a challenge – one that will only be met once the effects of inequality, segregation and a socio-economic divide have been fully addressed. These factors cannot be addressed overnight, but we can immediately address the need to equip students with basic lawyering skills necessary for practice and success in the outside world. South Africa is a diverse, multicultural country with 11 official languages and it is imperative that future lawyers are able to provide a service effectively to clients from varied backgrounds, including ones dissimilar to their own.

- 2019| Pharmacognosy Networ...Background: Oxidative stress is implicated in most life threaten diseases. Objectives: This study evaluated the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant activity of Lippia Javanica’s crude extracts. Methods: Phytochemical screening was carried out on pulverized Lippia Javanica leaves using standard protocols. Crude extracts were prepared using various solvents (hexane, acetone, ethylacetate, methanol, dichloromethane respectively), and percentage yields calculated. The antioxidant activities of crude extracts were monitored with DPPH, ABTS and nitric oxide (NO) radicals using spectra techniques. Results: The phytochemical presents in Lippia Javanica were tannin, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids and phenols. Percentage yield increased in order; Acetone > Methanol, > Dichloromethane > Ethyl-acetate > Hexane. All the crude extracts showed differ degrees of antioxidant potential as evidence by significantly (P < 0.05) scavenging DPPH, ABTS and NO radicals, Acetone crude extract showed the lowest IC50 (2.22 × 10-3 and 2.42 × 10-3 mg/ml) toward DPPH and ABTS radical respectively in comparison to other crude extracts, and the positive controls (Ascorbic acid and Butylated hydroxyl anisole), Hexane crude extract showed the lowest IC50 (3.95 × 10-1 mg/ml) toward NO radical compared with other treatments. Conclusion: Therefore, this study proves that Lippia Javanica crude extracts are good source of natural antioxidants in alleviating oxidative stress diseases. Isolation of bioactive compounds from crude extracts are desirable for future studies.

- Background: Diabetes mellitus has been identified as one of the global cause of disability and death. Objectives: The study aim to investigate the in-vitro antidibetic and antioxidant activities of methanolic extract of Encephalartos ferox leaves. Materials and Methods: The plant was screened for its Phytochemical composition. The plant material was extracted with methanol and the methanolic extract was screened (in-vitro) for its antioxidant activity using ABTS and DPPH assays. The potential antidiabetic activity of the plant extract was evaluated against some carbohydrates (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and lipid (pancreatic lipase) digestive enzymes. The inverted intestinal sac model was also used to investigate the effect of the extract on intestinal glucose absorption. The anti-protein glycation activity of the extract was determined using haemoglobin. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of most of the phytochemicals (Tannins, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, Alkaloids etc) that were screened for. The crude extract exhibited the antidiabetic potential as it significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase in a dose dependent fashion. The extract also effectively reduced intestinal glucose absorption. The extract further showed antioxidant activity by efficiently scavenging ABTS and DPPH radicals with IC 50 values of 68.3 µg/ml and 308 µg/ml, respectively. The extract also inhibited haemoglobin glycation, thus displaying the anti-protein glycation potential. Conclusion: It is apparent that E. ferox extract could serve as scaffold for diabetic therapy. For future study, cytotoxicity profile and in vivo investigation of the antidiabetic activity of the crude extract are essential.

- 2019| Gaurav PublicationsPolyploidy was induced in Corchorus olitorius L., a traditional leafy vegetable, which is also consumed by the rural community at KwaMbonambi. Corchorus seeds were treated with colchicine at four different concentrations (0.025, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1 g/l) for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 h, respectively. For the control, treatment seeds were imbibed in water only. After germination in petri dishes, seedlings were transplanted to seedling trays and then to plastic pots and kept under shade cloth at the University of Zululand. There were three replicates for each treatment in a completely randomized design. Several morphological traits were measured and data were subjected to ANOVA, principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Significant (P<0.05) variation was observed among all traits measured, with all traits decreasing in value as the colchicine concentration and treatment duration increased, with the exception of stem girth. Of all traits measured, only the leaf chlorophyll content of plants treated with 0.025 g/l colchicine for two hours was significantly (P<0.05) higher than for the control treatment. The principal component analysis showed that the first two principal components (PC1 and PC2) contributed more than 80% of the total variation. The Pearson's correlation coefficients were positive and significant (P<0.05) for the majority of studied traits. Clustering pattern showed a close relationship between the C. olitorius plants treated with low colchicine concentrations and shorter treatment durations. A similar trend was also observed in the biplot. Colchicine treatment induced sufficient variability among treatments to be useful in future breeding programmes.

- 2019| Springer NatureCadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles have been synthesized from CdX2 (X = Cl–, I–) complexes of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde and benzophenone thiosemicarbazone. The complexes have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The solvothermal decomposition of the complexes has afforded oleylamine-capped CdS nanoparticles with a wurtzite hexagonal phase. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies show different morphologies which are influenced by reaction temperature and the nature of the ligands on the precursor complexes. Particles in the form of irregular cubes, elongated cubes and nanodendrites have been observed. The UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements show temperature and nature of complex-dependant optical properties. Blue-shifted band gap energies have been observed at lower reaction temperatures.

- 2021| World Scientific Pub...In this paper, we investigate a Bianchi type I exact Universe by taking into account the cosmological constant as the source of energy at the present epoch. We have performed a [Formula: see text] test to obtain the best fit values of the model parameters of the Universe in the derived model. We have used two types of data sets, viz., (i) 31 values of the Hubble parameter and (ii) the 1048 Pantheon data set of various supernovae distance moduli and apparent magnitudes. From both the data sets, we have estimated the current values of the Hubble constant, density parameters [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The dynamics of the deceleration parameter shows that the Universe was in a decelerating phase for redshift [Formula: see text]. At a transition redshift [Formula: see text], the present Universe entered an accelerating phase of expansion. The current age of the Universe is obtained as [Formula: see text] Gyrs. This is in good agreement with the value of [Formula: see text] calculated from the Plank collaboration results and WMAP observations.

- Brand crises are unexpected and any organisation can be exposed to a brand crisis. Existing research on brands in crisis focus mostly on the effectiveness of the organisation’s response. However, there is limited research on the effect of a brand crisis on consumer’s brand loyalty. This study aims to examine the impact of a brand crisis on a consumer’s brand loyalty, with the Listeriosis crisis used as a case study. A quantitative research method was used to collect data from 384 randomly selected food retail store shoppers at Empangeni and Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, through the use of questionnaires. The findings reveal that females and males differ significantly and high-income earners expressed loyalty to Rainbow and Enterprise even after the Listeriosis crisis because of their reliability, the unique products that they offer, and the fact that they satisfy their customer needs. Findings also showed that customers remain loyal even after a brand crisis.The research was limited to uMhlathuze municipality thus it cannot be generalised. The brand crisis was limited to the Listeriosis case. This study contributes to the literature on brand management by examining why consumers remain loyal to certain brands even after a crisis. This study also provides insight into how organisations can prepare for a crisis because there is no organisation immune to a brand crisis. The research concludes that because of the strong relationship that consumers have with brands, the former is less affected by crises. Moreover, the positive prior beliefs towards brands faced with a product-harm crisis, lead to less blame from consumers. Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that brand loyalty far outweighs temporal crises. Organisations should build strong and positive relationships with consumers through engaging in corporate social responsibility activities and should also have a crisis management team to handle product-harm crises.

- Going beyond the static, dangerous version of a single story about who an African child inmate is, is an ethical responsibility – especially when we consider the structural and material forces that are tangled in this evil deed. Drawing on a sociological framing of self and Foucault’s theory of ethics, we take a narrative inquiry stance to explore what can be learnt about being an African child from a juvenile ex-inmate, Bakhona who negotiates the complex educational experience as a poor, orphaned and homeless child. The three storied vignettes represent our attention to the multiplicity and fluidity of self – negotiated through the entangled pathways of learning to and from prison. The analysis releases our eyes to a deeper understanding of the young African child who turns to crime driven by a desire to learn, know, and live differently. The choice to learn to care for self differently within dislocating and unproductive material and structural conditions is complex and possible if schooling as a system can become more educationally relevant, socially responsive and inclusive teaching and learning sites.

- Aproaerema modicella (Deventer), Aproaerema simplexella (Walker) and Stomopteryx subsecivella (Zeller, 1852)(Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) are micro moth (Micro-Lepidoptera) pests of groundnut and soya bean that have beendescribed as different species on different continents. Recent DNA analyses of these species suggest that they areconspecific. Here, a review with emphasis on the genetics, biology, ecology and known host plant preferences of this apparent species is given. We argue, through the genetic/DNA data and analyses, that the three species should be grouped as a single species. The review ends by highlighting the areas that need further research to confirm our hypothesis.

- Aspalathin is a rooibos flavonoid with established blood glucose lowering properties, however, its efficacy to moderate complications associated with hepatic insulin resistance is unknown. To study such effects, C3A liver cells exposed to palmitate were used as a model of hepatic insulin resistance. These hepatocytes displayed impaired substrate metabolism, including reduced glucose transport and free fatty acid uptake. These defects included impaired insulin signaling, evident through reduced phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase/ protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) protein expression, and mitochondrial dysfunction, depicted by a lower mitochondrial respiration rate. Aspalathin was able to ameliorate these defects by correcting altered substrate metabolism, improving insulin signaling and mitochondrial bioenergetics. Activation of 5´-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) may be a plausible mechanism by which aspalathin increases hepatic energy expenditure. Overall, these results encourage further studies assessing the potential use of aspalathin as a nutraceutical to improve hepatocellular energy expenditure, and reverse metabolic disease-associated complications.

- In the present study, the effects of metallic doping on the photoelectron\chemical properties of zinc oxide thin films have been studied. All films have been deposited using the spray pyrolysis technique at a constant doping level of 3 wt% whereby Cu, Ni, and Pb were used as dopants. The structure of all films was studied by X-ray diffraction which showed the grain size of all doped films to be 50 nm. The energy band gap of all films was estimated using optical transmission spectroscopy. The Ni, Cu, and Pb-doped ZnO photoelectrodes were applied for the photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 generation from H2O. Pb doping leads to the highest photocurrent of the ZnO photoelectrodes. The current density–potential characteristics were measured under white light and monochromatic illumination. The stability of the electrode was quantified as a function of the number of H2 production runs and exposure time. Finally, the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency, IPCE, and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency, ABPE, were calculated. The optimum IPCE at 390 nm was ∼30% whereas the ABPE was 0.636 at 0.5 V.

- Background: Acacia senegal (Fabaceae) Wild is a leguminous tree with economic values, but its leaves are under-utilised. Objective: To investigate the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of crude extracts from A. Senegal’s leaves. Methods: Methanol and acetone crude extracts of leaves of A. senegal were prepared by maceration using organic solvents, methanol and acetone respectively. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts were evaluated using Association of Agricultural and Chemist (AOAC) protocols. Antioxidant activities of the crude extracts were determined using 2, 2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) respectively. Results: The crude extracts (acetone and methanol) showed vary quality of phytochemical constituent including flavonoid, alkaloids, carbohydrate, saponins, tannin, steroids, and terpenoids. Acetone crude possessed significant (P < 0.05) higher total flavonoid and proanthocyanidin content in comparison with methanol extracts. Whereas, methanol crude extract possessed significant higher total phenol content compared with acetone crude extract. The crude extracts showed antioxidant activities as evidence in scavenging ABTS and DPPH radicals. However, acetone crude with lower IC50 of 0.09 mg/mL possessed significant higher ABTS scavenging ability compared to methanol (0.07 mg/mL) and ascorbic acid (0.07 mg/mL). Conclusion: The crude extracts could serve as a promising natural antioxidant agent in management of oxidative stress diseases. For further studies, bioactive compounds need to be ascertained.

- The emergence of COVID-19 necessitated the need for lockdown and social distancing. It presented additional challenges for teachers and learners with disabilities (LwDs), whose life and active learning engagements depend largely on social interaction with teachers, caregivers, therapists and peers. COVID-19 presents anxieties associated with teaching and learning processes, potential relapse of previously gained learning outcomes and aggravated disabling condition. However, there seems to be less teachers’ capacities to continually foster learning among their LwDs during the lockdown because there are low teachers’ morale and pedagogical gaps for digital teaching. Based on the current realities, it is evident that there is need for a shift in teacher preparation to be able to teach LwDs in crisis situations. Hence, this reviewed intellectual piece advances the need to modify the existing teacher education curriculum to extensively build on teachers’ morale while incorporating the use of technology in teacher preparation programmes in Africa.

- We consider a homogeneous and anisotropic cosmological model, namely, a Bianchi type-I model in which deceleration parameter is time dependent in the context of f (R, T ) gravity theory. To obtain exact solutions of the field equations, we use a form of the deceleration parameter that varies as the nth power of time, and covers Berman’s law (Nuovo Cimento B 74:182, 1983) where it is constant. For n =1, it covers cosmological models with linearly varying deceleration parameter given by Akarsu and Dereli (Int J Theor Phys 51:612, 2012). We extend the behavior of cosmological models for n = 2, and discuss the physical and geometrical properties of the model, and we show that the model is consistent with current observations.

- Goats in rural communities are often raised in conditions which do not allow them to achieve their maximum performance nor express their genetic potentials. For goats to perform to their full potential, they require high nutritious feed especially in the winter season when there is food shortage or during high milk-producing periods. However, supplementation can be done using fresh green feeds, protein blocks or vitamins which are often expensive, hence the need to source for indigenous crop residues. This study assessed the knowledge and perceptions of farmers on feeding sweet potato vines to their goats. The data were gathered by administering a total of 105 structured questionnaires using face-to-face interviews. The results showed that the majority of farmers (71.4%) were aware and practise some sort of supplementary feeding. Most farmers (72.4%) cultivated sweet potatoes, and they used them for different purposes such as income generation (53.3%), consumption (27.5%) or both (8%). Sweet potato vines were being discarded as waste or burnt (32.4%), left on the field as manure (25.7%), conserved as propagation material (8.6%) or randomly fed to livestock (7.6%). Nevertheless, most of the farmers (78.1%) rejected the use of sweet potato vines as feed to livestock. In conclusion, more intervention measures are required for developing farmers’ knowledge and perception on feeding sweet potatoe vines to livestock.
