- Violence against women is a significant problem that has been the focus of attention since the 1960s and 1970s. However, the research endeavor is relatively young and much remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine why, despite their success, education and independence, young black women remain in abusive relationships. A qualitative research methodology was employed with semi-structured interviews used for data collection and content analysis. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants. Thirteen young, black women, with tertiary education and employed by an individual or organization participated in the study. A number of themes emerged during the interviews and in responses to the survey questions. Many of the reasons provided by the participants for remaining in an abusive relationship revolved around Fear, Shame, Insecurity/low self-esteem, Helplessness and Investment.
