In vitro antiviral, antioxidant and in vivo antipyretic activity of three South Africa medicinal plants crude extracts

Abstract:
This study investigated anti-viral, antioxidant activity and anti-pyretic of crude extract from Artemisia afra, Artemisia absinthium and Pittiosporum viridflorum leaves. The crude extracts were prepared by maceration using aqueous, methanol and dichloromethane respectively. Antiviral studies were evaluated with influenza virus using Fluorescence based - Neuraminidase inhibitors. Antioxidant activities determined with DPPH, Nitric oxide, hydroxyl and super oxide anion radicals’ Anti-pyretic activities were evaluated using rats with yeast induced pyrexia. Total phenol, flavonoids, and proanthocyanin contents of the plants samples were evaluated using standard protocols. The crude extracts exhibited neuraminidase inhibitory activity against the influenza virus at different thresholds. Artemisia absinthium aqueous extract showed the best activity against A/Sydney/5/97. Whereas Artemisia afra methanol crude extract displayed highest antioxidant potential against the tested antioxidant parameters. All the crude extracts significantly reversed yeast induced pyrexia in rats, similar to paracetamol. Thus, they could serve as natural remedy for respiratory diseases such as Influenza.

- The whole world strives for a meaningful existence where a reasonable degree of harmony and tolerance can be maintained. This is not to imply any form of homogeneity as this would raise unrealistic expectations of a people shaped by wide-ranging contexts. As can be expected of a young democracy, South Africa, even after the lifting of discriminatory policies, is faced with challenges most of which are rooted in its apartheid legacy. There are sectors of society that are still disgruntled, after twenty-three years of democracy. Due to this situation some of the Zulu people, a nation that is historically known for ubuntu (humanity), are among those behind the torture of their fellow African brothers and sisters in the diaspora in what is commonly known as xenophobia. This article probes the situation and maintains that through their literary works authors can play a prominent role in bringing back ubuntu principles to the nation inundated with poverty.

- The synthesis of the complete range of (Bi1−xSbx)2S3 solid solutions, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, by the variation of the mole ratio of bismuth and antimony piperidine dithiocarbamate complexes is reported. There was a near linear expansion of a and c lattice parameters as the mole ratio of the antimony precursor was increased. The composition of the particles directionally followed the amount of precursor ratio used. When the composition of particles was compared to cell parameters, a slight deviation from Vegard's law was observed with a corresponding contraction of the b parameter and an approximately 3.5% reduction of the lattice volume. The nanorods obtained showed aspect ratios that depend on the composition of the material. The Bi and Sb rich materials had high aspect ratios of 16.58 and 16.58 respectively with a minimum aspect ratio of 2.58 observed for x = 0.50.

- There is a school of thought that holds the view that the concept of race has a biological referent. In other words, they are of the view that race is biologically real. However, there is a general consensus among the academic and scientific community that race being biologically real is false. The main aim of this article is to argue that interactive constructionism is a more preferable anti-realist position than racial eliminativism. In other words, I will present interactive constructionism as a panacea for what ails racial eliminativism. Firstly, I will begin by giving an analysis and then a critique of racial eliminativism, which is a theory that advocates for the entire elimination of all references to race. Particular attention will be paid to Anthony Appiah’s version of racial eliminativism. I will argue that Appiah’s version lacks cogency and is ultimately controversial because he endorses racial identities, the building block for the formation of race that he wants eliminated. Secondly, I will argue that interactive constructionism – a theory that posits that the groups that we call “races” are really racialised groups – is preferable because it not only allows us to talk about and write policies about the groups that we have been calling “races”, but also does not make the mistake of legitimising or laying the foundation for the concept of race.

- Niccolò Machiavelli’s works impacted Shakespeare’s context directly through the availability of manuscript translations. There were also a variety of sources where Machiavelli’s impact was indirect – for example, the mirror for princes genre, Innocent Gentillet’s Discours Contre Machiavel (1576) and Marlowe’s plays featuring the stage Machiavel. Shakespeare may also have known Edmund Spenser, who was familiar with The Prince (1532). Machiavelli’s contribution to ideas about politics, across different borders and historical contexts, has been demonstrated by intellectual historians, Quentin Skinner and J.G.A. Pocock. They show Machiavelli’s contribution to destabilising accepted myths about monarchical supremacy. This article discusses Hal’s, Hamlet’s and Kent’s exercising of their political will as unique responses to the complicated political intrigues of 1 Henry IV, Hamlet and King Lear. These political mavericks demonstrate coherent psychological responses to poisonous political situations.

- A composite of tubular g-C3N4 with α-Fe2O3 has been synthesized to improve the photocatalytic performance of tubular g-C3N4 by the formation of a Z-scheme heterostructure. The composites were fabricated by the combination of varying amounts of hydrothermally synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanotubes (NTs) and protonated ruptured tubular (RT) g-C3N4, by the electrostatic self-assembly method. The obtained composites were characterized by zeta potential, powdered-X-ray diffraction (p-XRD), scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM), photoluminescence (PL), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). PL and photocurrent measurements indicates a higher charge separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pair for Fe2O3 NTs/RT g-C3N4 composite with higher concentration of α-Fe2O3 NTs. UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis/DRS) shows the band gaps of pristine α-Fe2O3 NTs and RT g-C3N4 to be 1.86 eV and 2.72 eV respectively, while the band structures were determined by Mott-Schottky measurements. I-V curves obtained from photoelectrochemical water splitting shows that the formation of the composite decreased the oxidation overpotential as compared to pristine α-Fe2O3 NTs and pristine RT g-C3N4. Bode plots showed that the composite was able to increase the lifetime of the photo-generated electrons as compared to both RT g-C3N4 and α-Fe2O3 NTs.

- With the centenary of the founding of the Institute for Social Research (aka the Frankfurt School) almost upon us, it seemed an opportune moment to consider anew the legacy of critical theory. This reconsideration was intended not in the sense of an investigation into intellectual history, but rather as an affirmation of critical theory’s continuing relevance to the analysis and diagnosis of the contemporary world. The articles collected here range across a variety of topics, but all speak to the enduring vitality of critical theory as a resource pool of methodological and critical insight.

- Wild leafy vegetables are commonly included in the diet of people in rural homesteads of northern KwaZulu-Natal. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient content of one common and nine scarcely known wild leafy vegetables consumed in this area. Ten wild leafy vegetables were analyzed for their proximate composition, amino acids and mineral contents to evaluate their importance in human nutrition. Wild leafy vegetables differed significantly in terms of their nutrient content. Newly recorded and scarcely known wild leafy vegetables Albertisia delagoensis, Ipomoea plebeia, Ipomoea wightii, Limeum sulcatum, Pyrenacantha kaurabassana, Pyrenacantha scandens, Riocreuxia torulosa and Sesamum alatum had all nutrient content higher than well-known Amaranthus hybridus, with very few exceptions. The highest moisture, ash and protein contents as well as total amino acids were recorded in R. torulosa and/or S. alatum. This study recorded for the first time the nutrient content and relationship among nine rare wild leafy vegetables consumed by rural communities in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

- In this article, I look at violence as a pathology of the intersubjective contact. In particular, I claim that one possible explanation of violence is lack of recognition on a societal, intersubjective level. I propose an explanation based on Honneth’s concept of struggle for recognition and Merleau-Ponty’s account of intersubjectivity. The article takes the following course: I first give a short outline of the concept of intergenerational transmission of violence, as understood by psychology at the level of an individual, followed by a brief presentation a summary of sociological research on the concept. Then, I proceed with a discussion of Honneth’s three modes of recognition, viz. love, rights, and solidarity, as modes of intersubjective contact, leading to the development of self-confidence, self-respect, and self-esteem. I claim that the lack of these kinds of recognition leads to the decrease in confidence and trust and consequently to abusive behaviour, that it affects social integrity and brings about the destruction of social functions, and that it results in an individual and a society which have lost their “honour” and dignity. Finding his account of intersubjectivity lacking in its philosophical aspect, I complement Honneth’s account of intersubjectivity with that of Merleau-Ponty, based in his understanding of the intertwining of the subject and the world and the reversible contact between and among subjects within the world. Considering the negative effects of misrecognition as described by Honneth, in the light of Merleau-Ponty’s understanding of intersubjective contacts among subjects, I conclude that a country where all three modes of recognition have been disturbed houses a society lacking self-confidence, self-respect, and self-esteem, and consequently shows all the signs of Honneth’s forms of disrespect, i.e. abuse and rape, denial of rights and exclusion, as well as denigration and insult, all of which are forms of intergenerationally transmitted violence.

- One of the weather-related shipping hazards in the Caribbean Islands is an intense anticyclone during winter. Surges of trade winds cause steeply sloped short-period (<7 s, >2 m) waves to penetrate the shipping lanes near Puerto Rico. In addition to the large-scale air pressure gradient (5 hPa/300 km), the Antilles Islands funnel the winds (>10 m/s) and accentuate the surface heat fluxes (>200 W/m2) and air-sea momentum transfer. Here, the weather scenario surrounding a case of damage to a supply ship 30–31 December 2015 is presented, when the wave height-to-length ratio exceeded 3%. This case is placed in context by statistical analysis of climate and weather features contributing to intensified trade winds. A negative Pacific-North America pattern during La Nina enhances an anticyclonic ridge north of Puerto Rico, contributing to steep waves. The research highlights the hazard to shipping of short-period waves produced by surges of trade winds.

- Nigeria was ranked third in the 2016–2017 Global Terrorism Index Report behind Iraq and Afghanistan, overtaking the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on the list. What makes the Islamic radical organization, Boko Haram, of Nigeria stand out from other terrorist groups in the world is not only in its modes of recruitment, but also its ability to involve all categories of the society. Male and female, rich and poor, young and old as well as the employed and unemployed have been recruited through teaching, preaching, propaganda, inducement, abduction, coercion, and foreign support. Boko Haram, which literally means “western education is forbidden” in the Hausa language, is homegrown, contrary to what is chunked out to the media. The sect was already widely known before it pledged its allegiance to ISIL in 2015.

- Over the decades, there has been a recurrent and sustained argument that the Nigerian state, like its counterparts in Africa and other countries of the developing world, underperforms due to lack of state capacity to deal with the contemporary complexities of governance. This article examines the state of governance in Nigeria and assesses the factors militating against the promotion of public good and effective service delivery in the country. The article draws data from secondary and primary sources, which include the authors’ close observations of events in Nigeria. Governance and political leadership in Nigeria have been driven by self-interest and other primordial considerations, which take priority over that of the public. The state has failed in three major areas: security of lives and properties, promotion of the rule of law, and provision of visionary leadership. In conclusion, the nature and characters of the political leadership explains the Nigerian state incapacity for effective governance.

- Meteorological controls on big waves south of Africa in the period 1987–2013 are described. European Community daily climatology since 1987 shows that waves from the SSW off East London at 34S, 27.5E are most frequent in the range 2–4 m and 8–10 s, and pass through a warm pool where heat fluxes amplify air–sea momentum transfer. Time series of 3-hourly Wavewatch v3 swell direction, height and period data at a key point near East London since 1998 provide a basis for analysis, and reveals numerous cases of big SSW wave events during the winter months from May to September. A composite of the six largest cases was made by averaging meteorological fields over a large area south of Africa. The big-wave composite reveals a 975 hPa deep low at 51S, 33E that is slowed by a blocking high in polar latitudes. The highest ranked winter storm case within the time series forms a case study: 24–26 June 2009, and reveals a cold air outbreak producing heat fluxes up to 800 W/m2 under 20 m/s southerly winds in a massive fetch area 35–60S, 15–30E. Swells of 8 m reached the South African coast, damaging infrastructure there.

- Indigenous leafy vegetables (ILVs) are an underutilized source of minerals and vitamins in sub-South Africa. However, they could play a huge role in addressing household food insecurity and malnutrition. Corchorus is a highly nutritious but underutilized ILV, which is consumed by some rural communities in Africa. This study was thus undertaken to evaluate the nutritional composition and determine the genetic parameters of mineral nutrient traits of 11 Corchorus accessions for potential use in future crop improvement programme. The Corchorus genotypes were grown in a field experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications over two growing seasons at the Agricultural Research Council, in Roodeplaat, South Africa. Fresh leaves were collected just before flowering, washed in de-ionised water and air-dried before analysis. The mineral nutrients phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), boron (B), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Data were subjected to ANOVA, principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Genetic parameters were determined for all the traits. The analysis of variance indicated the significant (P<0.05) variation in mineral nutrient content among the accessions. The study also revealed the presence of two singletons (AV006 and SA002), as well as the presence of additive genes for several mineral nutrients. The variation among the accessions was deemed sufficient enough to allow for use of the accessions in a breeding programme.

- Considering the negative impact of mining on ecosystems in mining areas, the South African government legislated the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (No. 28 of 2002), to compel mining companies to restore the land affected by mining. Several studies have used remotely sensed data to observe the status and dynamics of surface mines. Advances in remote sensing along the cloud-based Google Earth Engine (GEE) now promise an enhanced observation strategy for improved monitoring of mine environments. Despite these advances, land rehabilitation at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) is mainly restricted to field-based approaches which are unable to reveal seamless patterns of disturbance and restoration. Here, we illustrate the value of the trajectory-based LandTrendr algorithm in conjunction with GEE for mine rehabilitation studies. Our automated method produced disturbance and recovery patterns (1984–2018) over the RBM site. The study revealed that RBM has progressively been mining different portions of the mineral-rich coastal area after which restoration was undertaken. The duration of mining over each site ranged from 2 to 6 years. The LandTrendr outputs correspond with independent reference datasets that were classified with an overall accuracy of 99%; it captures mine-induced disturbance efficiently and offers a practical tool for mine restoration management.

- Sweet potato production is affected by agronomical practices such as orientation of cuttings at planting and cultivar selection. Thus a study was conducted to test the effect of two cutting orientations at planting (horizontal and vertical) for four sweet potato cultivars (‘Ndou’, ‘Blesbok’, ‘Monate’ and ‘199062.1’) on vine length and yield in the Verulam area of northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design with four replications per treatment. Vine length was measured for five randomly selected plants per plot at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after planting. At 5 months after planting, aboveground fresh biomass (ABM), market able yield (MY) (101–1 200 g), non-marketable yield (< 0.05) differences in TSRY and HI observed.

- In this article, I argue that the recently exposed slave trade in Libya involving Black African migrants seeking opportunities in Europe is not merely a crime against humanity that has been justly condemned by the international community, but is also a serious indictment on the failings of the African Union’s leadership. It is a reflection of the duplicitous nature of Europe’s commitment to human rights and exposes the African leaders’ moral and leadership deficiencies. Through the use of the Hamitic hypothesis and the cultural racism theory, I discuss some causal factors that have led to the abuse of sub-Saharan Africans migrating to Europe and also the African response to the migrant crisis. Finally, I draw parallels between what I term the New Slavery and the evolving narrative of racism and conclude that poor African leadership is the Achilles’ heel in the restoration of African dignity.

- Background: Death and loss are inevitable, and life changes profoundly for those left behind. A General Household Survey by Statistics South Africa indicated that 94.2% of orphans aged 7–18 years were still attending school. With no parental and often familial support, learners often had to turn to their teachers for support. Vukuzakhe, a non-governmental organisation, saw the need for a grief programme in schools. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate how the school-based grief programme is perceived by different stakeholders (grieving children, educators and programme facilitators). Setting: The grief programme is being implemented in four primary schools in Underberg and Himeville, rural KwaZulu-Natal, and this study will conduct an evaluation at all four sites. Methods: Appreciative Inquiry, based on a four-dimensional cycle, was used to evaluate a grief programme offered in selected primary schools in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Three stakeholder groups (grief support programme facilitators [n = 4], grieving children [n = 6] and educators [n = 2]) from four schools were asked three open-ended questions to ascertain the programme’s value. Results: Nine key themes were identified: healing, insight, relationships, growth, skills, support, enjoyment, collaboration and value of the programme. All stakeholders noted positive outcomes resulting from participation in the programme and held it in high regard. Conclusion: Improvements for its future development were suggested and recommendations made for its further implementation at schools throughout South Africa.

- A chamber-pot or its equivalent in a work of literature is a generic indicator, prohibiting a text from membership of a high genre. Such objects have appeared in novels from the beginning, but they have not traditionally featured in poetic genres other than satire. While in satire a chamber-pot's function is usually to evoke disgust, in the realist novel its presence is a signal of the completeness of the material world and the full humanity of the characters. When chamber-pots start to appear in narrative poems, transgressing the rules of the high poetic genres, they mark these narratives as verse-novels, belonging to both poetic and novel genres.

- Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) found in all domains of life are known for their catalytic versatility and stereo- and regio-specific activity. While the impact of lifestyle on P450 evolution was reported in many eukaryotes, this remains to be addressed in bacteria. In this report, Streptomyces and Mycobacterium, belonging to the phylum Actinobacteria, were studied owing to their contrasting lifestyles and impacts on human. Analyses of all P450s and those predicted to be associated with secondary metabolism have revealed that different lifestyles have affected the evolution of P450s in these bacterial genera. We have found that while species in both genera have essentially the same number of P450s in the genome, Streptomyces P450s are much more diverse than those of Mycobacterium. Moreover, despite both belonging to Actinobacteria, only 21 P450 families were common, and 123 and 56 families were found to be unique to Streptomyces and Mycobacterium, respectively. The presence of a large and diverse number of P450s in Streptomyces secondary metabolism contributes to antibiotic diversity, helping to secure the niche. Conversely, based on the currently available functional data, types of secondary metabolic pathways and associated P450s, mycobacterial P450s seem to play a role in utilization or synthesis of lipids.
