Humanising pedagogy: a politico-economic perspective

Abstract: In this article I shall reflect on the issue of humanising pedagogy, taking a view that dehumanisation, in general, comes from two kinds of oppression. I shall argue that, apart from oppression of the political type, tertiary education is also a victim of another type of oppression which contributes to its dehumanisation, viz. the oppression exercised by the economic system that South Africa has chosen to adopt after 1994. In the context of these two factors, I shall discuss what humanising pedagogy is, as presented in selected literature. I shall then discuss the political oppression and Freire’s educational solution. Further, I shall present the effect of neoliberal economy on higher education. Finally, I shall, in full circle, go back to the issue of humanising pedagogy and the possible solutions, coming from Freire, but also Fanon, Said, and Bhabha. I shall conclude with a personal reflection on the situation in South Africa and the role it could play in remedying the educational quandary. Ex Africa semper aliquid novi!

    The objective of the study explore the ‘new normal’ introduced by the global covid-19 pandemic and the South African education post-pandemic recovery strategy. The study discussed the recovery strategies adopted by the South African institution of higher learning post-CVID-19, to understand the innovative measures used, as well as the impact of the covid-19 epidemic in South Africa. On March 15, 2020, all South African post-secondary institutions began to implement steps to achieve the government's mandate of social isolation and lockdown, while continuing to conduct their main business of teaching and learning. To prepare for the national lockdown measures, a public higher education institution performed an immediate examination of all operations supporting and enabling the academic project. “There was a 'new normal,' with all teaching and learning activities taking place entirely online and academic staff needing to quickly prepare and capacitate themselves”. This paper uses a qualitative technique or approach and the data were primarily collected through secondary sources with baseline available literature to critically reflect on how societies have dealt with such pandemics and shocks, situating the South African experience in a global and comparative perspective. It serves as an institutional case study, critically examining how its ideal of accessible excellence and equity was mediated by current events and its agility, emphasizing some of the problems and conflicts during the pandemic.

    This study explored the perspectives of teachers on learners’ performance in scarce skill subjects. A qualitative approach was used to investigate the challenges of teaching and learning scarce skill subjects in King Cetshwayo District. Bronfenbrenner's theory of ecological systems was adopted as the theoretical framework to underpin the phenomenon. The theory enables the researchers to understand human development in various social, legal, economic, political, and technological environments. A semi-structured interview guide was used for the data collection for the study. Data from the face-to-face individual interviews were thematically analyzed to present interpretive findings for discussions. Findings revealed that several factors, such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, and inadequate appointments of teachers, contributed to learners’ poor academic performance in scarce skill subjects. Seemingly, inadequate necessary support from stakeholders affects the teaching and learning of these subjects in South African high schools. The study recommends collaborative effort among all stakeholders through regular evaluation of teaching to enhance learners’ academic performance.

Hence, there is a need to critically explore the effective use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube as communication tools for information sharing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has become necessary for many different organisations. In the quest to avoid the spread of incorrect information and bad news that may cause panic from the general public, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, bloggers and news agencies call for proper and effective use of social media platforms as communication tools.     This paper explores the impact of entrepreneurship education on tourism students’ entrepreneurial intention, and insights of the desirability and feasibility of starting a tourism-related business upon graduation. A structured questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 154 randomly selected tourism students in a comprehensive University in South Africa. Data analyses included descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses to address research objectives. The results indicate that entrepreneurship education influences tourism students’ entrepreneurial intentions, including students’ perceptions of the desirability and feasibility of starting tourism-related businesses. The findings further suggest that some respondent profile variables have influences on how tourism students perceive entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial behaviour. The study recommends that the university that is stu-died implement a variety of reform programmes aimed at increasing employability or self-employment among university tourism graduates. Among them is the addition of a new entrepreneurship track to the undergraduate curriculum. Students, as from their first year of study should be invited to apply for the entrepreneur-ship education track, which includes business training as well as individualised coaching sessions with industry mentors. This will aid in the formation of professional networks, increased entrepreneur-ship process knowledge base, and self-efficacy among tourism students who want to become tourism entrepreneurs.

    Background: Early 2014, subdermal contraceptive implant was introduced in South Africa, Implanon® NXT, aiming to expand the method mix, increase effectiveness and availability to long-acting contraceptives. The initial uptake was extremely high, but concerns have been raised with treatment failure and high number of removals reported. Aim: The study focuses on describing women’s perceptions with use of Implanon® at a primary health care (PHC) facility in KwaZulu-Natal. Setting: This study was conducted at a selected primary health care (PHC) facility in KwaZulu-Natal. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive study design was used. Through purposive sampling, a sample of 60 women from 15 to 50 years old were recruited. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire and analysed using SPSS 24 software. Results: Study findings show that slightly above half of respondents, 32 or 58.1% expressed satisfaction towards the implant, 20 or 40.9% had stopped using the implant as a result of its major implications. It was found that an edge above half of respondents continued using the implant 28 or 50.9%, while close to half had abandoned it (27 or 49.1%). Some respondents reported that they were experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding and low sex drive as serious unwanted side effects forcing them to stop using Implanon®. Conclusion: Side-effects and poor screening, counselling and support are major reasons for early removal. It is imperative to develop an effective screening tool and to re-train healthcare workers on Implanon® NXT. Contributions: This article contributes to increase awareness of women’s perceptions about Implanon® contraceptive.

    The application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in information and knowledge management (IKM) has attracted the attention of library and information Science (LIS) scholars in the recent past. The multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of ICTs means that the ICT literature is published in several fields of knowledge. Although Bradford’s law of dispersion is commonly used to determine the core journals in a given field or discipline or topic of study, this study attempts to use the principles of the law to determine the core concepts of ICTs within the information and knowledge management literature. Data was obtained from EBSCO Discovery’s Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and the Library and Information Science Source (LISS) databases using a variety of keywords as search terms. The procedures of conducting a Bradford analysis were followed to determine the core subject terms in ICTs as reflected in the IKM group of articles published between 1998 and 2017. The results indicate that the application of ICTs in IKM largely occurs in the fields medicine, business and commerce, education and training (higher education and training), decision sciences, and industrial management. It was also noted that the core subjects varied from one study period to another; technology-associated subject terms were largely visible; and the dispersion of subject terms fits the Bradford’s dispersion. We however noted that the dispersion of articles according to Bradford’s zones is not accurately representative of the principles of the Law. The study has implications for collection development, searching and retrieval practices, and the application of Bradford’s law beyond the analysis of core journals or publications in not only IKM but also in the field of library and information science.

    In the present work, we investigate the power-law entropy corrected holographic dark energy (PLECHDE) model with Hubble horizon cutoff. We use 46 observational Hubble data points in the redshift range 0 ≤ 𝑧 ≤ 2.36 to determine the present Hubble constant 𝐻0 and the model parameter 𝑛. It represents a phase transition of the universe from deceleration to acceleration and has the transition point at 𝑧𝑡 = 0.71165. We investigate the observational constraints on the model and calculate some relevant cosmological parameters. We examine the model’s validity by drawing state-finder parameters that yield the result compatible with the modern observational data. The model’s physical and geometrical characteristics are also explored, and they are shown to match well with current observations of observational Hubble data (OHD) and the latest joint light curves(JLA) datasets.

    This article shares the lived personal and professional experiences of a group of author-translators who wrote, translated and adapted an academic textbook into an African indigenous language, isiZulu. The book, Izisekelo Zokulungisa Okubhaliwe: Izinsizakuhlaziya Nokwenziwayo, is the isiZulu edition of Text Editing: A handbook for students and practitioners, written in English by Van de Poel, Carstens and Linnegar (2012) and the Sesotho translation Metheo ya ditokiso tsa sengolwa by Maleti (2016). Both titles were used to guide the author-translators in determining the form and the content of the isiZulu edition. While most of the source texts could be translated into the target language, aspects that were specific to the target language (e.g. rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation) had to be originated. Besides this challenge, the author-translators had to develop terminology equivalent to that used in the source texts where it did not exist in the TL (e.g. terms specific to the realms of book publishing and text editing). Using Afrocentrism and Steiner’s hermeneutic motion, this study adopted a qualitative research approach from an interpretive perspective. Data derived from semi-structured interviews and praxis essays were analysed through the lens of Interpretative Phenomeno-logical Analysis (IPA). The production of the book highlights the emergence of a new image of the extraction of material from an academic territory, digesting and bringing it home to suit the target language while ensuring that meaning, culture, effect, academic style and register were maintained. The interdisciplinary nature of the work and the nature of the text being academic take the second and the third steps of Steiner’s hermeneutic motion a stride further. This research adds to Steiner’s work by acknowledging the existence of Source Text Exegesis (initial browsing and critical analysis) before hermeneutic motion starts through ‘trust’. The author’s lived experience reveals that it is possible to write, translate and adapt academic books from English into isiZulu, one example of how an African language can be intellectualised. Although the available indigenous equivalents for terms in Text Editing were generally limited, by using strategies such as semotaxis, neologism and transliteration, the author-translators produced a book that has contributed enormously to the development of new isiZulu terms in its field. Indeed, the book presented an opportunity to introduce practitioners to some of the standard terminology used frequently in the context of text editing and proofreading – in their own language. For many years, writing academic books in indigenous languages has been considered impractical and impossible because of the dominance of English and an unprecedented devaluation and marginalisation of African languages on the ill-perceived grounds that they are inferior to the so-called languages of civilisation and enlightenment. This article argues that African intellectuals are able to use translation to contribute to the decolonisation process of the mental realm and the intellectualisation of African languages (Alexander 1990).

    Canfieldite Ag8SnS6 (STS) nanocubes were prepared by the solution decomposition of precursors using heat-up and hot injection protocols employing coordinating solvents (oleylamine - OLA and dodecanethiol - DT) to afford monodispersed silver tin sulfide (STS) nanoparticles. The phase and shape of nanoparticles were tuned by varying reactants' temperature and mole ratios. The powder X-ray diffraction (p-XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicate phase pure orthorhombic Ag8SnS6 nanocrystals with nearly monodispersed particles ranging between 12 and 50 nm. The p-XRD patterns for the STS nanoparticles obtained by the heat-up method exhibited enhanced peak broadening than the hot injection route, accounting for the corresponding quantum confinement effects. Likewise, the (124), (227) and (266) planes of the reflections in OLA/DT capped STS crystals appeared well resolved, indicating that seed growth of a transitional Ag2S might be involved in the formation of the ternary chalcogenides. The values of the energy bandgap (Eg) were found in the range of 1.16–2.60 eV. At the same time, the STS nanoparticles exhibited high photon absorption and low quantum yield potentials, making them a possible candidate for photovoltaic cells and enhanced photoelectrochemical performance.

    The study aimed to determine if infopreneurship can be an employment option for Library and Information Science (LIS) students and graduates in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. Specifically, it investigated LIS graduates involved in infopreneurship, the requisite competencies, areas of infopreneurship, and challenges. Guiding the research was the interpretive paradigm. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study used the case-study design. Data were collected through triangulation of interviews, content analysis and observations. Non-probability sampling methods were used, i.e., purposive sampling and snowball sampling. A total number of 60 infopreneurs from KZN were interviewed. The results of the study revealed that infopreneurship is practised in South Africa, though a minimal number of graduates from LIS practise it. Furthermore, infopreneurship is constantly developing, as are the infopreneurship activities that infopreneurs can perform. Notwithstanding its challenges, the majority of the infopreneurs identified have been practising it for over five years. These results suggest that infopreneurship can be an option for employment for LIS students and graduates. Ultimately, there is a need for a curriculum review and development to best prepare students to be infopreneurs. Furthermore, there is a need to include infopreneurship policies for the fight against unemployment among graduates.

    The photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride can be enhanced multifold by introducing suitable dopants. Here we report incorporating a cost-effective, non-toxic and abundant element, i.e., tin, in elongated semiconducting carbon nitride (g-C3N4). A novel procedure was used to introduce varying amounts of tin to the g-C3N4 framework. The new photocatalysts (Sn–CN) were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR measurements, confirming the absence of tin oxide and incorporation of tin in the g-C3N4 backbone. The SEM, EDX, TEM and XPS measurements demonstrated the elongated morphology and the presence of tin in the composite materials. BET measurements showed a relative increase in the specific surface area for the composites. The optical measurements showed enhanced solar light absorption and promoted the charge carrier's separation after the insertion of Sn to g-C3N4. Photoelectrochemical water dissociation measurements showed that 10% tin doping increased the activity of g-C3N4 to water photo-oxidation about four times. This improvement was analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements.

    The study that directed this article aimed to assess the opinions of industrial researchers and librarians regarding library and information services provided by the research library of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Nigeria. The library of the modern era is expected to develop naturally, growing bigger to accommodate different kinds of information resources and services for better information provision to its users. This study set out to determine if library and information services at FIIRO were indeed answering this call. A mixed-methods design was adopted with the use of questionnaires, face-to-face interviews and observation for data collection. It was found that both groups, the industrial researchers and the librarians, were not satisfied with the library and information services offered by the institute’s library. Poor funding, lack of political will by the management and government authorities, and the lack of internet connectivity were highlighted as some of the main problems facing library fitness. In order to improve these services of information provision, the study recommends several innovations, mainly that librarians should be involved in management decisions, especially in the formulation of library policies and strategies.

    This paper explores the depiction of black African refugees in The Jungle, a2017 play by two young British playwrights, Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson. The Jungle is a theatrical recreation of the lives of refugees from the migrant camp in Calais, from which hundreds of refugees made – and still make –often fatal attempts to enter the UK through the Channel Tunnel. The graphic images of the squalid living conditions of its residents – many of them from Africa – dominated the news, as did the dramatic manner in which the camp was dismantled in 2016. This paper is interested in the textual gestures and representational decisions of the playwrights in the written play that provide clues to the possible ways in which black Africans are thought of and constructed in the minds of Europeans. In this way, this inquiry contributes to analysing literary engagements with contemporary African migration to Europe provided from European points of view.

    The synthesis of photocatalysts with a suitable bandgap that could speed up the rate of oxidation of chemical effluent is of utmost importance to material chemists. It has been observed that chalcogenide nanostructures research continues to dominate scientific work over the last few years based on their exciting bandgap within the semiconductor bandgap range. In this research work, novel class I2-II-IV-VI4 quaternary chalcogenides nanoparticles were synthesised using co-precipitation by varying the reaction conditions of temperature (200 °C and 250 °C) and, essentially, capping agents (citric acid and glycerol) and the mole ratio of precursors. The resulting nanoparticles were purified and vacuum dried to give a black crystalline solid. The Powder-X-ray Diffraction analysis of the as-synthesised heterostructure chalcogenides showed novel pure phase materials that exhibited the orthorhombic and cubic Ag2FeSnS4 crystal systems reminiscent of the parent compounds Ag8SnS6 and AgSnS2 under different experimented reaction conditions. The morphological characterisation of the HC chalcogenides by Transmission Electron Microscope revealed that the nanomaterials formed were predominantly nanocubes, with particle diameters ranging from 22.98 ± 1.67 to 57.26 ± 12.93 nm. Further elucidation of the optical property of the HC nanoparticles by Tauc's plot based on the data derived from UV-Vis spectrophotometry measurement revealed that the bandgap ranged from 1.58 to 1.99 eV. The FTIR absorption character of the as-synthesised HC nanoparticles provided evidence for the surface functionalisation, confirming the presence of moieties like the hydroxyl (O-H) at 3396.16 cm−1 and carbonyl group (C=O) at 1712.31 cm−1. At the same time, the UV-Visible spectrophotometry, measured over a range of 250 to 1000 nm, showed broad absorbance between 420 and 800 nm, confirming the optical property of the nanoparticles. The result showed that heterostructure chalcogenide nanoparticles would have an excellent photocatalytic application.

    There is a paucity of information on the serum biochemistry of indigenous Zulu sheep in different seasons and rangeland type. Twenty clinically healthy Zulu rams aged at least 12 months were selected in different rangeland type, namely, Moist Coast Forest and Thornveld (MCT), Dry Highland Sourveld (DHS),Moist Zululand Thornveld (MZT), Natal Sour Sandveld (NSS),and Lowveld (LV) in KwaZulu-Natal from November 2014 to June 2015. Sheep with highest body weights were observed in LV and NSS (P < 0.05). Sheep with highest body condition score werefoundinMCT,LV,andDHS(P < 0.05). The concentration of albumin was high(P<0.05)in MZTandDHSandlow (P < 0.05) in NSS. Globulin and total protein concentrations were high (P < 0.05) in NSS. Albumin, total protein, and creatinine levels were higher in dry season (P < 0.05). Glucose and blood urea nitrogen were higher in rainy season (P < 0.05).InLV,albuminconcentrationwashighinrainy season than in dry season (P < 0.05). In NSS, albumin concentrationwashigh indryseason than inrainy season (P < 0.05). Globulin concentration was higher during dry season in MCT (P < 0.05). In MCT, there was a higher total proteinconcentrationindryseasonthaninrainyseason (P < 0.05). In NSS, the concentration of β-hydroxyl-butyrate was significantly higher in rainy season compared to dry season. Creatinine concentration was significantly high during dry season in LV, NSS, and MCT. There was a positive correlation on body weight against globulin, total protein, creatinine, and β-hydroxyl-butyrate (P < 0.05). Serum biochemistry of Zulu sheep varied with rangeland type, season, and their interactive effect.

    The development of digital technology, particularly the usage of social media, has improved connectivity throughout the world. The COVID-19 virus spread around the world for the past two years, and countries went on lockdown. This pandemic has boosted the adoption of digital technology globally, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The COVID-19 epidemic brought the region's many issues to light as well as a few new ones. Many young people are leaving rural communities to seek better opportunities in the surrounding, more developed urban areas, and this is one of the many issues that rural communities in Africa deal with. Many of these rural villages decline and ultimately perish. Rural communities can change with the adoption of digital technology, which also offers chances for economic expansion. Several obstacles contribute to the slow uptake of digital connections in rural regions. Poor to no Internet connectivity and interrupted electricity supply are major problems in Africa. In South Africa, electricity is declared a national disaster. The research looks at how rural communities may adapt to using digital technology for development to sustain agricultural output, produce alternative sources of energy thereby reducing such challenges and cut down on power outages. The application of such developments will increase internet access. Moreover, the adopting digital technology and artificial intelligence can offer several solutions and create new jobs. The research was conceptualised using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory and Uses and Gratification Theory. This study used a desktop research approach reviewing of the literature. The potential from digital transformation provides to enhance the employing of renewable energy this in turn supports rural people simultaneously providing relief to South Africa's energy needs is one of the study's primary conclusions.

    Islamic law forbids fornication and adultery (zina) and is regarded as one of the serious hudud offences. Islamic law tries to enforce sexual morality to the core and anyone who is found guilty of fornication is punished with one hundred lashes and a married Muslim who is found guilty of adultery may be stoned (rajm) by a group of Muslim believers until that person dies to send a clear warning to wannabe adulterers. Notably the penalty of stoning for committing adultery is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran but only mentioned flogging with one hundred lashes as punishment for both fornication and adultery. Both flogging and stoning as punishment for zina are not in line with the doctrine of international human rights that forbids torture. The transformative ambition of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development acknowledges the importance of human rights for all in achieving a sustainable development that leaves no one behind.

    Islamic law forbids fornication and adultery (zina) because they result in several societal problems such as bitterness in relationships, spread of diseases and the confusion of lineage. Any child born because of zina is regarded as walad al zina (an extra-marital child). There is consensus amongst the various Islamic schools of thought (madhab) that an extra-marital child (walad ala zina) has no relationship with his or her biological father. As a result of this absence of connection, the biological father faces no legal obligation to maintain his extra-marital child. On the contrary, every parent regardless of marital status has a full legal obligation to maintain his or her children under the South African common law. It is submitted that the exclusion of an extra-marital child from receiving child maintenance from his biological father merely because he was born outside marriage, does not promote the principle of the best interest of the child at all. Furthermore, the exclusion also constitutes a violation of the child’s equality rights and dignity and is therefore unconstitutional.

    Reports from previous studies now provide evidence that dyslipidaemia and oxidative stress play crucial roles in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes and its related complications. This research is aimed to investigate the potential effects of protein isolate from Parkia biglobosa seeds (PBPI) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats by measuring blood glucose levels, changes in lipid metabolism and biomarkers of oxidative stress. Diabetic rats were treated orally with graded doses of PBPI, 200 mg/kg bw and 400 mg/kg bw, and 5 U/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.) of insulin once daily for 28 days with the fasting blood glucose (FBG) monitored weekly. The effect of PBPI on the serum lipid profile was measured while the extent of lipid peroxidation (LPO), as well as antioxidant parameters (superoxide dismutase; SOD, catalase; CAT, glutathione-S-transferase; GST and total glutathione; total GSH), was determined in the cardiac homogenates of diabetic rats. At the tested doses, treatment with PBPI was significantly effective in lowering FBG, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), while concurrently increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). PBPI also significantly decreased the elevations witnessed in LPO levels and restored the biomarkers of oxidative stress in the cardiac homogenate of experimental rats. The results from this study demonstrate that PBPI could improve dyslipidaemia and cardiac oxidative stress in the experimental diabetic animal model possibly by reducing and effectively scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) production as well as by increasing antioxidant capacity in combating oxidative stress. Therefore, it can be concluded that PBPI could be explored in the development of a potent cardioprotective supplement or adjuvant therapy towards the management of diabetes and its related complications.
